Word Champion
Five word games, fifty typing lessons, a talking dictionary and a journal. Everything speaks. Keyboard only.
For Windows. It uses your screen reader if one is running, and your default Windows voice if not, so it works on a machine with nothing else installed.
$14.99, one payment. The download is the full program as a 14-day free trial: every game, every lesson, nothing held back. Buy a licence and the key is emailed to you straight away; type it in once and Word Champion runs offline from then on. One licence covers one computer.
The games
- Word Scramble, unscramble the letters. Any valid word from those letters counts, not only the one it had in mind.
- Hangman, letters tried and lives left, spoken on request.
- Speed Spell, spell against the clock. The timer starts after the word has been read to you, so listening costs you nothing.
- Category Challenge, name anything that belongs in the category.
- Word Chain, each word starts with the letter the last one ended on.
Typing
Fifty lessons, home row through capitals, numbers and punctuation. Each one says which key to press and which finger to use. Shift is taught before any lesson asks for a capital.
Words are spoken as words; drills, punctuation and digits are spelled out and named, and capitals are announced as capitals. Alt+R repeats the exercise, Alt+S spells it slowly.
There is a speed test, and a keyboard feedback mode, press any key, hear what it is.
Dictionary and journal
Look up any word and hear its meaning, synonyms and antonyms in a menu you arrow through, not a wall of text.
The journal is a plain writing space with a spell checker, a thesaurus and a word count, moving by line, word and character.
Built for the way you already work
Nothing is silent. Every screen, every state, every result is spoken.
Your screen reader keeps its own settings. When your screen reader is speaking, its rate and voice are left alone, you set your reading speed once and this respects it. F9 switches between your screen reader and the Windows voice and says which it moved to.
Low vision is not an afterthought. Font sizes from small to extra-large, colour schemes, and a high-contrast mode that meets WCAG AAA on every colour role. Changeable at any time and remembered between sessions.
Function keys do the obvious things, help, volume, play time, word of the day, a quick note.
Requirements
Windows 10 or 11. Tested with NVDA, and works on its own with the built-in Windows voice. No internet connection needed to play; registering a licence is one online check, once.
After the trial
The games, typing lessons, dictionary, Practice Mode and Quick Play need a licence once the 14 days are up. Your journal, statistics, achievements and settings stay open, so nothing you wrote or earned is ever locked away.
